Lil Sensei: the synth that teaches you sound design
Lil Sensei is a free synthesizer plug-in by Lessons in Live that teaches sound design by building itself. It’s the free way into the Lessons in Live plug-ins, made by Camiel Daamen, Ableton Certified Trainer.
Learn by building
The panel starts empty. Every control appears after one multiple-choice question about it, right or wrong, with a two-or-three-sentence explanation and PLAY BEFORE / PLAY AFTER examples you can hear. The synth grows section by section in the order you’d build a sound: oscillator, envelope, filter, second oscillator, unison, LFOs, sub and noise, arpeggiator, effects and master.
- 71 lessons in 10 chapters, with BACK to look at a question again. Your progress is saved and shared by every Lil Sensei on your computer.
- Already know synths? Unlock everything with one click.
- 7 tutorials that build classic sounds with you step by step: a house bass, a warm pad, a pluck / stab, a kick drum, a riser, a lead and an arp sequence, each ending with a step that makes it sound analog.
A complete synth once it’s built
- Two oscillators with sync, FM and ring modulation, a sub, and unison with drift.
- Four filter characters (Clean, Ladder, Acid, Vintage) with FAT drive, and envelopes.
- Two LFOs, an arpeggiator, the mod wheel and aftertouch.
- Effects: a Juno-style chorus, a tape / ping-pong delay, a plate / hall / room reverb and glue compression.
- 700 presets, 100 each for bass, keys, pads, leads, arps, FX and drums & more, with a browser, favourites and search.
In English and Spanish
Lil Sensei habla español: every lesson, tutorial, button and menu. It follows your computer’s language and you can switch it in the menu.
Belt colours
The body comes in the colours of the jiu-jitsu belts: white, blue, purple, brown and black.
